There is No Such Thing As Just A Mom
There is no such thing as being “just a mom.” In fact, as we read the Bible, mother's serve as the handmaidens of the story of redemption. From Eve to Sarah to Mary, motherhood is one of God's means of accomplishing His purposes and bringing promise and redemption into the world.
This isn't just the case for the big name moms. You know, the mothers in the Bible everyone remembers. All of us can't raise the Son of God, right? Even unknown motherhood is known to God.
Consider the wife of Noah. Though nameless in the Bible, Noah's wife is a hero. She lived on the Ark with seven other people and countless animals for around a year. Be encouraged when you get frustrated during your next family vacation; at least you aren't Noah's wife! Consider the enormous amount she dealt with, yet she doesn't even get named in the Biblical account (Genesis 7:7)! She was essential because she walked by faith in quiet service behind the scenes. There is no such thing as just a mom.
But she was more than a patient wife to Noah. She was also the matriarch of nations and the mother of a new creation. Her three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth would populate the world that was drowned in the flood. Genesis 10 gives us a list of nations that came through her three sons. Mothers give birth to nations. There is no such thing as just a mom.
Genesis 10 also provides a foreshadowing of the future. Ham gave birth to the Canaanites and the Philistines who will be in conflict with the people of God throughout the Old Testament. Wars across the centuries have been fought because of nations birthed by the unnamed wife of Noah.
Shem would give birth to a man named Abram, the patriarch of all Semitic peoples. The whole Middle East, with all of its conflicts, wouldn't be possible without an unnamed mother. Even our present headlines are can be directly drawn back by her motherhood. There is no such thing as just a mom.
Today, motherhood has been minimized and even demonized, but there truly is nothing more significant. Through mothers, families are formed. Through motherhood, nations are born. Through moms, futures are shaped and redemption is born.
The apostle Paul reminds us that “when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman” (Galatians 4:4). The Savior of the world came through a mother. In that way, God used motherhood to save the world (1 Timothy 2:15). There is no such thing as being just a mom. May we give thanks to God for that!
